The female Thai was sourced straight from Thailand from the Issan Province, also called “the Real Thailand” due to the people being most sincere, kind and welcoming inherent Thai qualities. The Issan province is notoriously hard to farm which makes it one of the poorest provinces in Thailand, which doesn’t get the tourism that other parts enjoy. The majority of people speak Thai, but many speak “Thai Issan”, a mixture of Laos and Thai dialects predominately in the Northern and central parts with people speaking Khmer and Thai dialects in the Southern parts due to proximity to the Cambodian border. Issan Province is in the Northeastern portion of Thailand with Laos on its northern and eastern border. Cambodia bordering its southern border and the rest of Northern, Central and Eastern Thailand to the west. Vietnam isn’t far away either as one would have to cross Laos first on its Eastern border. Due to its proximity too many different peoples and cultures, Issan cannabis strains may differ depending on what group of people have been cultivating that specific South East Asian heirloom. The Issan Thai used is a lowland variety similar to Chocolate Thai, which was sourced from the Laos border in Issan. The Senegalese Chocolate Thai grows much like its Lowland Thai mother which creates many bud sites of good-sized floral clusters with red pistils that produce good amounts of resin, which turn a golden-red hue with maturity. The Senegalese Chocolate Thai can get out of control, with branches and limbs branching off in all kinds of directions. The Senegalese adds some smaller structure and control to the unruly Thai, speeding up the longer flowering time of the South East Asian landrace. The Senegalese is a delicate red-trait Western African, with small stature and is poorly branched. But the floral clusters which are produced are highly resinous and colorful with shades of maroon, yellow, orange, red and shades of purple-streaking, making it a very colorful variety with dark red stems and petioles that come on later in flower. There are full on Thai phenotypes with no signs of the Senegalese, and some phenotypes which produce the colorful traits of the Western African line with the Thai structure. The highs are trippy, energetic and euphoric. Some phenos are tasty and aromatic while others are grassy and lower in quality. These are pure breeding lines combined with the breeder in mind, to bring out the traits for future breeding treasures.
These lines were combined for breeding purposes, unworked for those looking for something unique for their collection. The only criteria was removing intersex plants if any were found. Intersex traits were notorious for Thai lines in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but some of these tribal cultivars that were cultivated by indigenous peoples for centuries, in my experience, don’t seem to produce hermaphroditism as commonly as popular culture seems to imply.
