Description
Datisca Cannabina | False Hemp
False Hemp, also known as bastard hemp, Cretan hemp, or acalbir, is a stately & highly ornamental, large, back of the border dioecious perennial with rich green, pinnate leaves and strong arching stems that shoot up from ground level in spring, reaching 6 to 10 feet in the summer! (Will not flower the first year of growth.)
Clusters of small, greenish flowers appear in midsummer. If you have both male and female plants, the females will develop long, dangling chains of small seedpods and an arching form as the season progresses. The males have elegant, pendulous, flowering parts too! While Datisca cannabina is only 2′ wide at the base, the arching stems, with jagged marijuana-like leaves, open to 6- 8′ wide at the top. Insanely cool and will drive law enforcement and nosy neighbors crazy!
