Description
Papaver somniferum giganteum ‘Pink & White’
The Poppy somniferum gigantium is the poppy variety most often cultivated for culinary use and baking. The somniferum poppy is prized for the amount of seed produced by individual seed pods. This stunning pink & white, long-stemmed poppy grows to 30- 36 inches in height and produce 3- 7 giant flower heads per plant. The flowers are 3- 6 inches across and begin blooming early to mid summer.
Poppies prefer a cool climate over hot weather. They grow best in well-drained, loose soil. Scatter seeds in the fall, late winter, or early spring while the last winter snow recedes. Starting poppies at the edge of melting snow is recommended. (You can freeze seeds for 48+ hours before sowing to increase the germination rate.) When dried, the large seed pods are prized by florists for flower arrangements and other crafts. These are the largest poppy pods of them all!
